Minimally Invasive Surgery

Minimally Invasive Gynecologic Surgery

Women are faced with a variety of benign gynecologic conditions that may require surgery throughout their lifespan. Dr. Cindy Hall is well-trained to offer women surgical services for a variety of conditions.

A Center for Women's Care, P.C. treats a range of benign gynecological conditions, including:

  • Abnormal uterine bleeding
  • Ovarian cysts and masses
  • Endometriosis and pelvic pain
  • Uterine fibroids
  • Surgical sterilization

Benefits of Minimally Invasive Surgery

Many of these conditions can be treated through a minimally invasive approach. Minimally invasive surgical options generally include hysteroscopic, laparoscopic, and robotic surgery. The advantages of minimally invasive procedures include:

  • Faster recovery times
  • Minimal scarring
  • Reduced blood loss and infection rates
  • Less postoperative pain

Types of Minimally Invasive Surgery

Laparoscopic Surgery

Patients having laparoscopic surgery will have a small incision inside or near the belly button, and may have other small (less than 1cm) incisions beneath the belly button. These small incisions allow the passage of a camera and special instruments into the abdomen, allowing the doctor to carry out the surgery.

Benefits of laparoscopic surgery include:

  • Smaller incisions
  • Significantly less pain
  • Faster recovery
  • Shorter hospital stay
  • Lower risk of infections
  • Less blood loss
  • Less scarring
  • In many cases, better outcomes

Laparoscopy can be used to perform:

  • Hysterectomy
  • Evaluations for pelvic pain
  • Treatment of endometriosis
  • Removal ovarian cysts

Hysteroscopic Surgery
Hysteroscopic surgery involves placing a small camera through the cervix to look at the inside of the uterus. Specialized instruments can be passed through the camera which allows the surgeon to operate inside the uterus without an incision.

Novasure Endometrial Ablation

To treat heavy periods or menorrhagia, more women are choosing NovaSure Endometrial Ablation. The NovaSure procedure is a quick, safe, simple, one-time endometrial ablation treatment. This minimally invasive procedure controls heavy bleeding by using energy to remove the lining of the uterus. The average treatment time is about 90 seconds, and only needs to be performed once to lighten or stop periods. No pretreatment drugs are required and NovaSure can be performed in the hospital or office. Without the side effects of hormones or the risks of hysterectomy, NovaSure has a quick recovery time. Most women experience no pain after the procedure, and can return to work and regular activities the next day. NovaSure reduces bleeding and much more; with more than 500,000 patients treated to date, NovaSure is proven safe and successful. A clinical trial has shown that 9 out of 10 women return to normal or lower than normal bleeding levels following treatments with NovaSure. For some women, their periods even stopped completely. Many women also experienced a reduction in PMS and painful periods, as well as other benefits such as less anxiety, greater self-confidence, and a boost in energy.

Urinary Incontinence

Urinary incontinence affects approximately 13 million adults in the United States and can greatly interfere with normal daily activities. If you leak urine when you laugh, cough, or sneeze, then you may have stress incontinence. A simple office test can determine if you are a candidate for a new, minimally invasive procedure to treat urinary incontinence.

  • Can be done as an outpatient
  • Incisions less than half an inch long
  • Over 80% satisfaction rate after 5 years
  • About 15 minutes to perform, and
  • Recovery period of less than a week
